The GPUT has a new Adopt-A-Highway Commitment!
The section of road is SR201 where I-80 connects, mile markers 2-4, right at the entrance of the Kennecott Utah Copper Mine.
Several GPUT members participated in the first cleanup of that area on Saturday, May 21, 2005. This stretch appeared to have been orphaned for quite some time. Before the first mile was completed, more than 15 UDOT bags had been filled! Another cleanup will be scheduled to finish. Contact GPUT or 631-2998 to help!

Message of the Sunflowers
Sunflowers have become the symbol of a world free of nuclear weapons. After Ukraine gave up its last nuclear warhead, the Defense Ministers of the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine met on a former Ukrainian missile base, June 4, 1996. They celebrated by scattering sunflower seeds and planting sunflowers. Former U.S. Secretary of Defense William Perry said, “Sunflowers instead of missiles in the soil would insure peace for future generations.” Read more about the sunflower at:Sunflower.

The sunflower is used as a symbol by many Green parties around the world. In March 1983, 27 newly elected Die Grünen (Green) members of the West German Parliament, the Bundestag, entered the parliament building wearing bright colors and carrying sunflowers. The sunflower, which grows rapidly and produces many seeds, became the symbol of the new party. Pictures of the event were carried in the media around the world and helped inspire others in the U.S. and other places to begin organizing green movements in their own countries.

Green Party of Utah Officially Endorses America’s Whale Alliance

America’s Whale Alliance (AWA) is an affiliate of the Global Whale Alliance (GWA) and has been formed to oppose the United States’ Government’s change of policy in supporting the resumption of commercial whaling.

The international ban on commercial whaling, introduced by the International Whaling Commission (IWC) in 1986, has never been fully respected by the whalers. Over 25,000 whales have been slaughtered during the moratorium, which is now under serious threat of being lifted altogether. AWA opposes plans to bring back commercial whaling under the Revised Management Scheme (RMS), now being finalized by the IWC. The RMS will legitimize the killing of whales for profit and push the world back to the dark ages of mass whale slaughter.

Membership of AWA is open to all US citizens that believe commercial whaling has no place in a modern compassionate world.

AWA is calling for:

  • conservationist, environmental and animal welfare organizations, scientists and other US citizens to join us and help reverse the US Government’s pro-RMS policy.
  • the US Government to enforce the existing moratorium on commercial whaling by applying punitive political and economic sanctions against intransigent whaling nations.
AWA believes that:
  • The US has undermined the effectiveness of the IWC moratorium to date by striking bilateral deals with intransigent whalers to avoid applying meaningful sanctions under US law.
  • Increasing scientific evidence provides clear warning of a potentially catastrophic threat to whales and their environment.
  • Commercial whaling is both unnecessary and inherently cruel.
  • Consumption of contaminated whale meat poses a serious risk to human health.
  • We do not know enough about whales to manage them sustainably.
  • Global whale populations remain at historic lows after decades of unsustainable slaughter.
  • The IWC’s moratorium on commercial whaling represents an international conservation treaty that should be enforced by the international community, led by the United States.
  • The IWC cannot conserve whale stocks unless the moratorium is maintained and the growing environmental threats to whales are fully quantified and addressed.
  • Whale-watching is an economically viable, sustainable and more ethical alternative use of whales to commercial whaling.
America’s Whale Alliance is calling for US groups and citizens to join us, and support our campaign to end all commercial whaling, including so-called ‘scientific whaling’, and to oppose the RMS or any other compromise plan that will legitimize its resumption.
