Leaving Iraq: Pros and Cons

Saturday, April 29, 2006

A small audience attended to hear Utah U.S. Senate Candidates discuss the Iraq situation and other issues. While the evening began with all the candidates in clear harmony with their position on the Iraq War (exit now - although Pete Ashdown says leave it up to the Iraqi people....), it became increasingly obvious that there are other issues where there are divides, such as immigration.

Pete Ashdown's volunteers were great in getting Pete patched in via cyberspace, since he was in Kanab.

EARTH DAY 2006: GREEN EARTH FEST AT EARTH JAM

Earth Jamwas where the Desert Greens, the Nationally Affiliated Green Party of Utah, held its Green Earth Fest on April 22, 2006. The main activity was a children's table where children (of all ages!) made bracelets out of cut cardboard tubes, hats, molded things out of clay, made bubbles with a homemade bubble mix, and hula-hooped!

It was beautiful and fun day. We had lots of folks come by our table to get literature, talk and sign up for our mailing list. We had a reduce, reuse, recycle area where we had rummage sale items for donations.

We even got time to speak on the main stage about our party. Here are photos:

Speaking to the crowd
- Shane Cutler, a Co-Coordinator with the Desert Greens Green Party of Utah, speaks to the Earth Jam crowd about Earth Day and how it is up to we the people to "clean up our own messes. The government isn't cleaning up its messes and" his kids will be billed for it. Shane stated that the Green Party wants to change electoral politics so that the government does clean up its messes and so his kids kids won't have to keep paying for it. Shown with Shane are his children, Michael and Eli.

LOVE AMERICA: END THE IRAQ WAR
March 18 marked the day in Salt Lake that hundreds of citizens joined together to demand the U.S. withdrawl from Iraq on this 3rd anniversary of the Invasion and Occupation.

"How many more people need to die before the U.S. government admits this war was wrong?" said Deanna Taylor, a co-coordinator, and Salt Lake County Council District #5 Candidate, of the Green Party of Utah. "We've already spent $250 billion on the war, but things in Iraq keep getting worse instead of better. Instead of approving another $72 billion for war, Congress should be figuring out how much money will be needed to bring our troops home now and take care of them when they get here."

Tom King, Candidate for Utah House District #43 and National Delegate and for the Green Party of Utah, stated "People say we're anti-America, but it's the opposite. If they think that being pro-America means supporting an illegal war and fighting a nation that posed no threat to this country, then who is wrong?"

A gathering rally was held at Pioneer Park, followed by a march to the City County Building at Washington Square where a program of musicians, poets, actors, and speakers was presented. Later that evening a livley panel discussion was held on the illegality of the Iraq War.

SALT LAKE CITY CODEPINK CONDUCTS COUNTER RECRUITMENT AT WEST HIGH SCHOOL

SALT LAKE CITY (May 20)-On May 20, the Army Recruiting Command "stood down" for retraining of its recruiters after numerous allegations of unscrupulous tactics by recruiters. Salt Lake City CodePINK, part of CodePINK, a national movement of women for peace and social justice, on Friday May 20, at 2 PM, in coordination with the American Friends Service Committee, MMOB, ACORN,Working Assets, Utah Progressive Democrat Caucus, and the Green Party of Utah, "stood up" to conduct counter recruitment efforts at high schools across the country. They greeted West High School students as they exited classes for the day. They informed students of their privacy rights, under the "No Child Left Behind Act", and encouraged them to seek balanced information and weigh all of their options. Our high schools should be Military Free Zones! Jodie Evans, one of the co-founders of CodePINK joined the local group at this action!

SALT LAKE CITY CODEPINK is an evolving women-initiated grass-roots peace and social justice movement that seeks a sustainable world through positive social change with proactive, creative protest and non-violent direct action. SLCCodePink.

Nationwide, CodePINK has given "pink slips" to numerous public officials including President Bush for lying about weapons of mass destruction and to Arnold Schwarzenegger for his history of degrading women. They were active at the national conventions of both major political parties. Utah CodePINK has protested the country's involvement in Iraq, Halliburton's and Bechtel's profiteering, and Wal-Mart's low wages and oppression of workers. For more information see CodePink.
